The Fly Brave Foundation is celebrating ten impactful years of serving adults with developmental disabilities, and their journey is nothing short of inspiring. Founded by the mother-son duo Vanessa Bieker and John Almeda, this organization was born from a genuine need to support individuals after they age out of the school system. With only $600 and a heartfelt vision, they set out to build a community where everyone could thrive.
In July 2021, the foundation opened its delightful thrift and coffee shop in Sacramento, which has since become a critical space for job training. It trains neurodiverse adults in retail and customer service while showcasing their artistic talents through art and t-shirt sales. Talk about a win-win! Participants aren’t just learning—they’re creating connections and gaining confidence, which is evident in the bright smiles on their faces.
Excitingly, the foundation is also gearing up for its first 5K run for Autism, which has already sold out. This event not only celebrates the community they’ve built but also invites everyone to cross the finish line together. It’s a vivid reminder that when we come together, we can create a supportive environment that allows everyone to shine. Who knew that supporting adults with developmental disabilities could come with such a warm cup of coffee and a vibrant community spirit?
