A dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the foothills has finally ended. Seth David Cotten, 33, of Nevada City, peacefully surrendered to law enforcement this week after evading capture for weeks in connection with the death of Jeremy Norton, 45, also of Nevada City.
The violence didn’t start on April 11, the day Norton was found dead from a gunshot wound on Yellow Pine Lane near Graniteville Road. According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Cotten allegedly tried to kill Norton a week earlier, on April 3, firing at Norton and a second unidentified person. That failed attempt seemingly set the stage for the fatal shooting that followed just seven days later in rural Nevada City.
What makes this case particularly striking is how Cotten evaded authorities after Norton’s death. Rather than turn himself in, he went into hiding—but detectives tracked him down at a home in Grass Valley on Lower Colfax Road on Monday. When law enforcement surrounded the property, Cotten chose to surrender peacefully rather than escalate the situation further. He was booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on Tuesday on a Ramey warrant.
The investigation isn’t over. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that additional charges are anticipated as they continue piecing together the full picture of what led to the shooting and the circumstances surrounding both the April 3 attack and Norton’s death. For a quiet rural community, this case underscores how violence can simmer beneath the surface before erupting into tragedy.
