Mandatory Dorm Life: Sacramento State to Cage Freshmen for Two Years!

Sacramento State is making waves by announcing that starting in fall 2026, all incoming freshmen will be required to live in university housing for their first two years. While this may sound like a ploy to turn students into lifelong dorm dwellers, the university insists it’s about fostering student success and community engagement. Here’s hoping those first-year roommates are better than last night’s pizza!

Of course, not every freshman will be stuck in a dorm. The university has carved out a bunch of exceptions, freeing up any students who are 21 or older, military service members, or those with financial hardships. It’s also worth noting that if your family lives within 50 miles of campus, you might just get a pass for the 2026-27 school year, but watch out—by 2028, that limit shrinks to 30 miles!

To handle this chaotic living arrangement, Sacramento State is preparing to open a new residence hall, Mt. Whitney Hall, providing 335 new beds. And Riverview Hall is converting some single beds to accommodate this dorm invasion as well. With all these changes on the horizon, it seems like the university is committed to making sure freshmen have the ultimate college experience—complete with communal bathrooms and late-night ramen runs!

So, what do you think? Is this requirement a smart move for student bonding or just an excuse for universities to fill their dorms? Let’s hear your thoughts!
