A night of socializing in the dirt fields near Mather ended in unimaginable tragedy. Two young e-bike riders are dead after being struck by a Nissan Titan pickup truck traveling at an extremely high rate of speed in the Eagles Nest Road and Woodring Drive area, just south of the Mather Golf Course, around 9:15 p.m. The riders weren’t carelessly crossing—they were stopped at a stop sign when the truck lost control and ran them over.
What makes this crash particularly gut-wrenching is the connection between those in the truck and those on the bikes. According to Angie Monroe, a public information officer with CHP East Sacramento, all these young men knew one another. Witnesses reported they’d been hanging out together in nearby fields, possibly drinking, before the deadly moment unfolded. The truck was packed with people, and the recklessness of that drive has now reverberated through an entire circle of friends and families.
Two people fled the scene immediately after impact. One was found in a nearby field; another was arrested at his home on charges of felony hit and run, including great bodily injury or death to two others. A third person remains detained. Meanwhile, two additional people were hospitalized—one with major injuries, the other with moderate injuries—though investigators are still piecing together whether they were in the truck or in another vehicle clipped during the chaos.
Alcohol is suspected to be a major factor in the crash, and the devastation extends far beyond the immediate victims. Monroe’s words capture the weight of it all: It’s disheartening to know that people feel the need to drive so recklessly when it’s so senseless. So many lives are changed. The identities and ages of the two riders killed have not yet been released, but the families behind those names are grieving tonight, and a community is left asking hard questions about accountability and the choices young people make in moments that can never be taken back.
The crash forced Eagles Nest Road to close until after 4 a.m., but the road closure is the least of what’s broken here.
