When reality TV collides with politics, the results are usually messy—and this time, they’re also presidential.

On Wednesday morning at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, President Donald Trump threw his support behind Spencer Pratt’s Los Angeles mayoral campaign. The reason? Trump had heard that Pratt is a loyal MAGA supporter, and that’s apparently enough to earn the presidential stamp of approval. Trump didn’t claim to know Pratt personally, but he made it clear: if Pratt’s riding with him, he’s riding with Pratt.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Spencer Pratt is following a playbook Trump basically wrote back in 2015—a reality star turning politics into prime time. But unlike Trump, who owned his celebrity and ran with it, Pratt seemed caught off guard by the endorsement. When asked about Trump’s backing, he quickly pivoted to safer ground, telling TMZ that he doesn’t need Trump’s support—he just needs the backing of moms who want to feel safe in Los Angeles. He emphasized he’s laser-focused on that mission, not on party loyalty or celebrity endorsements in a city that leans heavily Democratic.

Trump, ever the strategist, also issued a warning about Pratt’s odds. He claimed California elections are run by dishonest people and made a characteristically dramatic comment about needing Jesus Christ to descend from heaven to fight Democrat dishonesty. It’s Trump in a nutshell: grand gesture, sweeping claim, zero subtlety.

The stakes for Pratt are real, though. He’s attacking incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom—both on Trump’s personal hit list—while promising a reality show cameras-rolling approach to the job. If he wins, viewers will get a docuseries following him, his wife Heidi Montag, and their kids through the mayor’s office. It’s governance as entertainment, and it’s either brilliant or deeply concerning, depending on who you ask.

What’s clear is this: Spencer Pratt just learned that a presidential endorsement in a Democratic stronghold is about as useful as a campaign contribution from a Super PAC your opponent founded. He might need that Jesus Christ intervention Trump mentioned after all.
