For over two decades, Jeff Probst has guided contestants through tropical islands and impossible challenges as the face of Survivor, but this May, the longtime host faced a personal loss that hits far closer to home than any reality TV drama.
News emerged that his younger brother, Scott Probst, has died. The announcement came through another family member—their brother, Brent Probst—who shared the difficult news on Instagram with a simple but heartfelt tribute.“Some sad news, our brother Scott is no longer with us,”Brent wrote.“He was a great brother, son and friend. I will miss him so much ❤️ I’m so sad he is gone.”A cause of death hasn’t been made public, leaving many questions about the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Scott wasn’t a stranger to the Survivor world himself. From 2006 to 2008, he worked as an art assistant on the show, helping shape the visual landscape of those iconic challenge sets and tribal council moments. Later, he returned to the production side as a cameraman from 2011 to 2012, giving him an insider’s view of how the show he’d helped build came together behind the scenes. For a family where the show became such a significant part of their lives, Scott’s contributions to Survivor meant more than just a job title.
This loss comes as Jeff and his brothers have already weathered significant family grief. Their mother, Barb Probst, passed away in 2024 at nearly 86 years old after battling dementia. In a touching tribute shared at the time, Brent reflected on her legacy:“She was the best mom, grandma and just a fantastic person full of love and life.”The Survivor cast and crew honored her memory during an episode with a tribute that read,“Dedicated to Barb, the biggest Survivor fan of all time. See you on our next adventure.”
Through it all, Jeff has maintained his public presence and his marriage to Lisa Ann Russell, whom he wed in 2011. The couple shares her two children from a previous marriage to Saved by the Bell’s Mark-Paul Gosselaar. In a 2012 interview with Larry King, Jeff reflected on how meeting Russell transformed his life:“I always thought I would have this family and this great family unit, because that’s what I came from. And then, one day, I met this woman, and it happened.”
For the Probst family, May 2026 marks another chapter of loss—a reminder that even those who spend their careers orchestrating survival stories for millions of viewers face their own battles offscreen.
