Sacramento Soldier Honored at Immersive Memorial Day Experience in Yuba City

When Robert Marzan answered the call to serve, he became part of a lineage that stretches across decades of sacrifice. The Elk Grove High School graduate and Sacramento native was killed during Iran’s initial retaliation against U.S. forces at a command center in Kuwait—one of countless stories that deserved to be more than a statistic.

This Memorial Day weekend, that changed. Marzan’s name was added to a 21-panel memorial at“A Grateful Nation Remembers,”an immersive event held at Calvary Christian Center in Yuba City. Alongside 12 other fallen service members, his sacrifice joined the names of 7,054 service members who’ve died in service to the nation since September 11, 2001.

But this isn’t your typical solemn ceremony. Organizers deliberately designed the experience to be felt, not just attended. The event features live Vietnam and Afghanistan reenactments, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, and speakers who’ve served in both conflicts. It’s designed to cut through the distance we sometimes keep from these stories—to make freedom’s cost tangible and real.

The message running through every detail is simple but uncompromising: freedom isn’t free. Veterans and family members who walked through those doors spoke of touching moments—seeing the names of friends and fellow soldiers preserved, knowing that their sacrifice won’t be forgotten. That’s the point. In a world where headlines move fast and memorial days can blur into long weekends, these immersive experiences force us to slow down and genuinely reckon with what service means.

For anyone in the Sacramento region, the event continued through Memorial Day at Calvary Christian Center, 2620 Colusa Highway in Yuba City. Admission was free and open to the public. It’s a reminder worth taking seriously.
