Palisades Tahoe Gets a Slimmer Makeover: A Bold New Plan for the Ski Village

In a move that’s sure to reverberate through both the skiing community and the environmental circles, the Placer County Board of Supervisors has approved a significantly scaled-back plan for the Palisades Tahoe ski village. Originally envisioned as a sprawling resort, the new plan reduces the total hotel and condominium bedrooms by a substantial 40%, bringing the new count down from 1,493 to just 896.

But the cuts don’t stop there. The commercial space is also getting a trim, dropping from over 277,000 square feet to a more modest 222,000 square feet. Even the much-anticipated Mountain Adventure Center is getting reshaped, shrinking from 90,000 square feet to 72,000—yes, we’re all feeling a little claustrophobic just thinking about it.

On the positive side, this drastic reimagining means more open space and a commitment to environmental sustainability. A remarkable $800,000 initiative fund is set to support environmental restoration and public trails while also backing a new West Valley Fire substation. It’s a win for nature, but leaves many wondering what this means for the future of the ski experience.

With workforce housing to accommodate about 295 employees included in the new plan, it appears that the community’s needs are being considered alongside the environmental impact. Who knew skiing could come with such responsibility? If they keep this up, we might just have to trade in our après-ski cocktails for some eco-friendly hot cocoa!
