Don’t expect Ghislaine Maxwell to walk free anytime soon. On Tuesday, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche testified before Congress and made it crystal clear: a pardon for the convicted Epstein associate isn’t happening under his watch.
The moment came when Senator Chris Van Hollen pressed Blanche on whether he’d commit to protecting victims by ruling out pardons for anyone named in the Epstein files. Blanche initially hedged, citing the tens of thousands of names in the documents. But when Van Hollen directly asked about Maxwell, the answer was unambiguous. Blanche agreed—no pardon recommendation.
This marks a significant shift in the conversation surrounding Maxwell’s potential clemency. Last year, Maxwell was reportedly hopeful for a pardon after the Trump administration debunked the so-called“client list.”A senior White House official shot that down immediately, but President Donald Trump acknowledged weeks later that he had the power to pardon her without committing either way. Maxwell even sat down for a series of conversations with the DOJ in July, dangling a complete account of her role in the Epstein operation in exchange for clemency.
That gambit appears to have backfired. Blanche took over the DOJ in April after POTUS fired AG Pam Bondi, and his testimony suggests a much harder line on the matter. The timing is telling too—Blanche’s statement comes just weeks after he became the agency’s top law enforcement officer, signaling that the new leadership isn’t entertaining the possibility.
For Maxwell, the writing’s on the wall. Without the Attorney General’s recommendation, a presidential pardon would face enormous political and public backlash. She’s serving a 20-year sentence for her role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation, and the public appetite for clemency simply doesn’t exist. Blanche’s testimony wasn’t just an answer to a senator’s question—it was a final word on a chapter Maxwell had apparently been hoping to close.
