Memorial Day is about more than barbecues and long weekends—though let’s be honest, those are nice too. It’s the day we pause to remember the men and women who gave their lives serving our country. Across Northern California, communities are gathering today to do exactly that, and there are dozens of ways to pay your respects.
The biggest event in the greater Sacramento area is happening at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, where the ceremony kicks off at 11 a.m. along Greenback Lane at Fair Oaks Boulevard. What makes this one special? An Air Force flyover—a reminder of the scale of sacrifice we’re honoring. But the real magic started earlier in the morning, when Scouts fanned out to place flags at gravesites. One eight-year-old Scout captured the spirit perfectly:“I like doing this because it helps us remember the people who have passed away in the war…they helped give us freedom.”
That’s the heart of it, right there.
If Fair Oaks doesn’t work for you, Sacramento County has options. Sacramento’s Memorial Auditorium is hosting a free event from 10 a.m. to noon with a brief ceremony, light refreshments, and live music. East Lawn Memorial Park in both East Sacramento and Elk Grove start services at 10 a.m., as does the Sacramento VA Medical Center event in Mather. Beyond Sacramento County, the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon (Solano County) opens at 9 a.m., Auburn’s New Auburn Cemetery ceremony begins at 9 a.m. (Placer County), and Lodi has two events running simultaneously—an American Legion ceremony at 9 a.m. at Lodi Memorial Park and a service at 10:30 a.m. at Cherokee Memorial Park (both San Joaquin County).
Stockton’s Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a lunch and ceremony at 1 p.m. at Memorial Civic Auditorium, while Yuba City offers an outdoor memorial at 2620 Colusa Highway with a ceremony starting at 12 p.m. Whether you’re looking for a formal gathering or a quiet moment of reflection, there’s something happening near you.
The ceremonies span the entire region because the need to remember spans the entire region. These aren’t stuffy, obligatory events—they’re communities coming together to honor real people. If you have a service member in your family who gave their life, KCRA is inviting you to share their photos and stories at KCRA.com/upload. Today’s a good day to tell those stories.
