Remember when Spencer Pratt was the villain everyone loved to hate on“The Hills”? Turns out being universally despised comes with a dark side—death threats. So what does a former reality TV villain do when his security team tells him he needs firepower to survive in Los Angeles? Apparently, he becomes a Republican.

In an interview Thursday with CNN anchor Elex Michaelson on“The Story Is with Elex Michaelson,”the now-Los Angeles mayoral candidate laid out his surprisingly straightforward logic: death threats from haters led him and his wife Heidi to purchase firearms. To get carry concealed weapons permits, he needed the political backing of a party that actually supports gun ownership. Enter the GOP.

It’s a refreshingly honest take on political realignment, even if it feels weird saying that about Spencer Pratt. He’s not claiming some grand ideological awakening or sudden shift in values. He didn’t discover libertarianism at a think tank or fall down a podcast rabbit hole. He got scared, bought guns, realized Democrats weren’t going to make that easy, and picked the lane that would. His security team essentially handed him a roadmap to the Republican Party.

The timing is worth noting. Pratt is running for L.A. Mayor against incumbent Karen Bass, City Council member Nithya Raman, and several other candidates ahead of the June 2 election. Whether this is a genuine political conversion or savvy brand positioning for a mayoral run—or both—is the kind of question that defines modern politics. Either way, it’s hard to argue the guy doesn’t know how to generate attention.

From reality TV villain to gun-carrying politician, Pratt’s journey tracks a weird but very real phenomenon: personal security concerns shaping political identity. Whether you see it as pragmatism or opportunism probably depends on your own politics. But there’s something oddly transparent about it all. At least he’s not pretending this is about anything other than what it is.
