Sometimes the most glamorous venue isn’t the smartest choice. Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson were initially eyeing a ceremony in the nation’s most famous residence, but reality—and a war in Iran—had other plans.

According to reporting from CNN, Anderson floated the idea of exchanging vows at the White House, which would’ve been historically significant: it would’ve marked only the 20th wedding ever held there, and just the third this century. For context, that exclusive club includes Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden, who married Peter Neal on the South Lawn in 2022, and Official White House Photographer Pete Souza, who married Patti Lease in the Rose Garden in 2013. Don Jr. would’ve been the first son of a president to marry in the White House since John Quincy Adams’son tied the knot with Mary Catherine Hellen in 1828.

But Don Jr. took the pragmatic route. He pushed back on the idea, citing the ongoing war in Iran as a major concern—and Anderson ultimately agreed with her now-husband’s assessment. President Donald Trump also reportedly told allies he wasn’t keen on the idea for the same reason. So instead of Rose Garden romance, the couple headed to The Bahamas for a small, private celebration. They’d already officially said“I Do”in Palm Beach, Florida ahead of the weekend getaway, according to their marriage license.

The decision speaks to something refreshingly grounded: even when you have access to one of the world’s most iconic addresses, sometimes the smart move is knowing when not to use it. A destination wedding in The Bahamas—intimate, low-key, and free from the weight of geopolitical optics—actually sounds like the better love story.

That said, a follow-up celebration at the White House could still happen later this year, CNN sources suggested. Because why choose between paradise and prestige when you might be able to have both?
