Black Mothers Matter: Examining the Heart of California's Maternal Health Crisis

California is grappling with a disturbing truth in maternal health: Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than their peers. To address this crisis, the California Black Birth Equity Summit brought together advocates, medical professionals, and policymakers to focus on Black-led solutions. Held in Sacramento, the summit aimed not just to address disparities, but to elevate the voices of those most impacted by these systemic issues.

Event founder Mashariki Kudumu emphasized that the community knows what works best for them. As she put it, “Our community knows what works for them,” spotlighting the significance of grassroots action in tackling these critical issues. The summit also featured discussions around supportive legislation like Senate Bill 65, which expanded Medi-Cal coverage for doula services—ensuring more women have access to the support they need during childbirth.

Participants at the summit took part in workshops, wellness activities, and advocacy dialogues that highlighted the importance of community engagement. The message was clear: building partnerships and collaborating across sectors is necessary for meaningful change. As Kudumu notes, the resources available to Black families and the environments they live in often have a much greater impact on maternal health than clinical solutions alone. Hopefully, the energy shared at the summit carries on, inspiring real change and lasting solutions. After all, health equity should never be up for debate; it’s a right, not a privilege.
