Bare Necessities: Portlanders Strip Down to Protest ICE Raids

In a move that perfectly captures the spirit of Portland, a group of naked bike riders recently hit the streets to protest ICE raids and Trump’s proposed deployment of National Guard troops. With temperatures hovering in the low 50s, these brave bikers showed that they were willing to sacrifice a little warmth to make a big statement. Who knew that tackling federal immigration policy could also require layers of wool socks and a hat?

This spontaneous protest was an “emergency” edition of the World Naked Bike Ride—an event typically reserved for summer, where nakedness celebrates body positivity and nudity as a statement. Janene King, one of the bold riders, aptly noted that this was a “quintessentially Portland way to protest.” It’s hard to argue with that! There’s no better way to draw eyes (and perhaps a few chuckles) to a serious issue than by literally taking it all off.

Portlanders certainly have a knack for creative demonstrations, often merging humor and advocacy in unexpected ways. As the ride ventured to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building, the participants skillfully combined joy with an essential message about community and mutual respect. It raises an interesting question: could this kind of expressive protest change the way we engage with important issues? Would you dare to join in—or at least cheer from the sidelines?

As the city waits for a court decision on the National Guard’s potential deployment, one thing’s clear: Portland proves that when it comes to activism, sometimes less is definitely more! Who knew a naked bike ride could be such a powerful statement?
