When a pandemic forced nonprofits to rethink how they raise money, San Joaquin County found an answer that’s only gotten stronger over time. Today, the region’s annual 209Gives event is back—and it’s bigger than ever.
What started in 2020 as a pandemic workaround has evolved into a lifeline for organizations across the county. Alfonso Villalobos with the San Joaquin Community Foundation explains the appeal: nonprofits struggle with the logistics and costs of hosting their own fundraising events. Many also battle the everyday challenge of simply keeping the lights on while doing their crucial work. 209Gives sidesteps those barriers entirely, giving nonprofits a free digital platform to connect directly with donors who want to give.
This year, a record 116 nonprofits are participating—a testament to how badly these organizations need this kind of support. Last year, the event raised $378,000. This year, the goal is even more ambitious: $450,000 to fuel programs and services that address San Joaquin County’s most pressing needs.
The beauty of 209Gives is its simplicity. Head to www.209gives.org, browse the causes you care about, and donate. That’s it. And Villalobos’s message is worth repeating: no donation is too small. Every contribution, whether it’s five dollars or five hundred, goes directly to organizations doing meaningful work in your community. In a region where nonprofits are stretched thin, that can mean the difference between a program staying afloat and folding.
