Why Sacramento’s Community Radio is the Real MVP in a Streaming World

In an era where podcasts and streaming services appear to dominate our listening habits, it’s intriguing to remember that traditional radio still holds an important place, especially in the Sacramento region. With around 82% of U.S. individuals aged 12 and older tuning in weekly, local stations are stepping up to provide unique alternatives to commercial radio. Community stations such as 93.3 K-ZAP and 95.9 KUTZ offer more than just music—they serve to spotlight local artists and voice community concerns. Dennis Newhall, General Manager at K-ZAP, highlights their commitment to share existing music while also pushing new boundaries—all while taking inspiration from the original K-ZAP.

Then there’s KDEE, known as the “grown folks station,” which caters specifically to the African American community. Leon Guidry, a community director at the station, points out that they cover important issues impacting the African diaspora, providing a perspective often overlooked by mainstream channels. Meanwhile, KVMR has carved out a niche as an emergency broadcast hub, proving that community radio can play a vital role when residents need information most, especially in times of climate crisis.

But being non-commercial isn’t without its challenges. Many of these stations face funding hurdles due to federal cuts and lean on listener donations to stay alive. Yet, the passion is palpable, with these stations forging ahead as essential platforms that allow local voices to thrive. With a blend of music and advocacy, community radio is living proof that sometimes, it’s the little guy that’s ready to make the biggest impact in an ever-changing media landscape. Who knew staying local could pack such a punch?
