Sacramento's School Calendar Shake-Up: Parents Hit the Snooze Button on Feedback

Sacramento City Unified School District is considering shifting the academic calendar to start the school year in mid-August and wrap up summer break by late May. This change, they say, would align better with other districts and improve the experience for older students. But here’s the catch: only two parents showed up to the last meeting to discuss it. Talk about a sparse turnout!

One frustrated parent expressed concerns about the district’s communication—let’s just say it sounded like their messaging could use a little more pep. Parents of younger kids felt sidelined since listening sessions were held solely at high schools. Roxanne Fuentes, a grandmother who made it to the meeting a tad late, certainly wasn’t shy with her thoughts. She believes parents and kids are none too pleased with the idea of an earlier back-to-school date.

As the clock ticks down to the November 14 feedback deadline, we’ll have to wait and see if the parents rally together to be heard. Until then, it seems like summer may be getting the short end of the stick. What do you think? Should school years start earlier? Drop your thoughts below—let’s dive into this discussion!
