Russian Businessman's Medieval Fortress Seeks New Owner—And a Dream

Vladimir Galaganov had a dream: build a castle in the middle of rural Russia, complete with archer towers and defensive walls. He actually went through with it. Now he’s trying to pass that dream—and the 1.2-hectare property—to someone else.

The fortress sits in Peskovatka village on the banks of the Don River, a 1,100-square-meter structure that looks like it wandered straight out of the Middle Ages and into a farmer’s field. When Galaganov first listed it online in 2021, he was candid about his vision: he’d dreamed of hosting Cossack and knightly tournaments, turning what could have been a simple home into a cultural hub.“In the Middle Ages, a castle was not only a dwelling and a defensive structure, but also a kind of cultural center,”he told V1.RU. It’s the kind of ambitious thinking that gets you on the internet—and it worked. The property went viral in Russia, but the tournaments never happened.

Building a fortress, it turns out, takes longer than expected. The initial asking price was 33 million rubles when Galaganov first tried selling. Over the next few years, the price fluctuated—dropping to 27.7 million rubles by summer 2023—before the property came back on the market this year at 40 million rubles (roughly $550,000). The reason? Galaganov admits circumstances changed.“I built it for myself, but circumstances have changed—I need money now, so I decided to put it up for sale,”he said. He’s not giving up on the vision, though. He’s suggested the new owner might run it as a hotel, tourist camp, or recreation center. The castle that never hosted tournaments might yet find its purpose—just not the one its builder originally imagined.

It’s a reminder that grand visions and reality don’t always align. But sometimes what fails as a personal dream can succeed as someone else’s business opportunity.
