Memphis Grizzlies Star Brandon Clarke Dead at 29

The NBA lost one of its rising talents on Monday when Brandon Clarke, power forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, passed away at just 29 years old. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but the loss marks another sobering reminder of how quickly life can change, even for those at the peak of their professional careers.

Clarke’s journey to the NBA was one of perseverance and growth. Selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was immediately traded to Memphis, where he would spend his entire professional tenure. As a first-year pro, Clarke earned a spot on the NBA’s All-Rookie team, a distinction that signaled he was exactly where he belonged. Over seven seasons, he appeared in 309 games, averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per night—solid, dependable production that made him a valuable rotation piece.

Before his NBA career, Clarke had already proven himself at the college level. Born in Vancouver, he started at San Jose State before transferring to Gonzaga in 2017. After sitting out a redshirt year, he became a force for Mark Few’s squad, helping lead the Zags to a deep NCAA Tournament run that ended in the Elite 8. Playing for Gonzaga, Clarke averaged 16.9 points per game and earned All-American honors from both the Associated Press and Sporting News.

The past season had been challenging for Clarke. A significant calf strain suffered in March severely limited his availability, leaving him to play in just two games heading into what would be his final weeks. Beyond the physical setbacks, he was also dealing with legal troubles. Last month, he was arrested in Arkansas after allegedly leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase. He was subsequently charged with possession and trafficking a controlled substance (kratom) and fleeing. That case was still ongoing when he died.

Clarke’s passing is a tragedy that extends far beyond the basketball court—a reminder that even those who seem to have it all still face unseen struggles.
