In an exciting turn of events, two long-lost pieces by the legendary composer Johann Sebastian Bach have finally resurfaced after 320 years. These remarkable works, titled Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor, were discovered by Belgian researcher Peter Wollny in the 1990s, tucked away in obscurity. Initially signed and undated, their true authorship lingered in the shadows until Wollny’s recent confirmation finally shed light on their origin.
The world got to witness this musical resurrection at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach himself served as a cantor. Dutch organist Ton Koopman had the honor of performing these treasures, describing them as“of very high quality”and perfect for both grand and intimate settings. It’s a delightful reminder of how even centuries-old compositions have the power to captivate us today. With Bach back in the spotlight, it begs the question: what other musical gems might still be waiting in the wings?
