A year of unanswered questions came to a devastating end when human remains discovered in the Carson National Forest were identified as Melissa Casias, a 53-year-old government worker who vanished on June 26, 2025, after dropping her husband off at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

A hiker stumbled upon the remains at McGaffey Ridge, and New Mexico State Police confirmed the identification. According to private investigator Thomas McNally, who’d been working the case on behalf of Melissa’s family, her body was found in an advanced state of decomposition—skeletonized, positioned against a tree, with a gunshot wound to her skull. A gun was located near the remains. The condition of her sun-bleached clothing and the absence of animal activity on the body provided clues to investigators about the timeline and circumstances of her death.

While NMSP hasn’t officially announced a cause or manner of death, McNally is emphatic that foul play was involved. He’s equally clear on one point: Melissa’s job at the lab had nothing to do with what happened to her. That distinction matters, especially given the intense scrutiny surrounding the deaths and disappearances of at least 10 government workers and scientists since 2023—a pattern that’s sparked conspiracy theories and federal investigations. McNally wants no part of those narratives.

What he does believe is that the investigation itself fell short. Melissa’s family is moving forward with a civil suit against NMSP, arguing that the agency mishandled the case during the critical months when she was missing. For a family that waited nearly twelve months for answers, the discovery brings closure but also raises hard questions about how a 53-year-old woman could disappear after a routine drop-off and why it took so long to find her.
