For over 54 years, the Miss Black Sacramento Scholarship Pageant has been a beacon of empowerment and self-expression for young Black women. The recent edition, held at Sheldon High School Performing Arts Center, crowned Maddison Morian Brodeur as Miss Black Sacramento and Grace Charity Longmire as Miss Black Teen Sacramento. Both winners were celebrated not just for their beauty, but for their impressive academic achievements, leadership roles, and community involvement.
Gone are the days of traditional beauty contests; this pageant has evolved into a scholarship-focused program that emphasizes personal growth and communication skills. Contestants participate in a wide array of categories, showcasing their talents and how they embrace their unique identities. It’s a refreshing shift from the classic pageant vibe to something that resonates more deeply with today’s values.
Angel Stewart, the executive director, highlights that the focus of the pageant has shifted from external beauty to recognizing the holistic contributions of Black women. With opportunities for mentorship and community service, every contestant leaves with something valuable, whether or not they take home a crown. As the pageant continues to grow, so does its impact—proof that true beauty shines from within!
