Sacramento Metro Fire is stepping up to empower citizens with the skills they need to save lives through a new community-based program. The recent unveiling of an automated external defibrillator (AED) at Hagan Park, available 24/7, marks a significant move toward enhancing emergency preparedness in the area. Firefighters are advocating for citizen responders—individuals trained in CPR that can jump into action when emergencies arise.
James Ellis from Sacramento Metro Fire highlighted the critical role bystanders can play in emergencies. He noted that performing immediate CPR can increase the chances of survival from a cardiac arrest to 30%, and using an AED can improve it further to 50%. With a population of over 720,000, the scarcity of AEDs becomes evident, with only three listed in public spaces—an alarming figure for such a large jurisdiction.
After the AED was showcased, the Metro Fire team held a CPR training event, giving community members the opportunity to learn vital life-saving skills. The initiative is a proactive step in changing the narrative around emergency responses—turning everyday citizens into heroes equipped to make a difference when it matters most. It’s all about readiness; because when it comes to emergencies, every second counts. So, who knew that helping your neighbor could also mean pulling out a defibrillator? Talk about being the ultimate neighborly superhero!
