The Sacramento Hmong New Year Festival has hit a significant milestone, celebrating its 50th annual event this past November. Held at Cal Expo from November 28 to November 30, attendees braved the chilly weather to embrace vibrant colors, lively performances, and a rich sense of community spirit. With around 40,000 participants expected, it was clear that this festival is more than just an event—it’s a cultural lifeline for many.
The festival featured a variety of attractions, including “Hmong Idol,” where local musicians showcased their talents before an enthusiastic crowd. Adding to the excitement was the stunning lion dance from the Teng Fei Lion Dance Team, a beautifully choreographed performance that drew plenty of cheers. Vendors, such as the family-owned Jolie Laos Silk, set up booths to connect with attendees while sharing traditional Laotian clothing, bringing a touch of cultural heritage to the forefront.
Local leaders, including Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang, highlighted the importance of such gatherings in fostering unity, especially in today’s world where community matters more than ever. Vang, who is the daughter of Hmong refugees, relished the opportunity to celebrate and connect with her roots at this joyous occasion.
With all its color and cheer, this year’s festival is a beautiful reminder of the power of tradition to bring people together. What’s a festival without laughing, dancing, and maybe a few nostalgic tears? Let’s mark the calendar for next year—who wouldn’t want to join in on the festivities?
