A Spiky Success Story: How One Couple Became Hedgehog Heroes in Scotland!

In an endearing tale of compassion and dedication, Andy Longhurst and Sharon Longhurst have turned their home into a haven for European hedgehogs. Since opening the Burntisland Hedgehog Haven in 2023, they’ve rescued and rehabilitated over 500 of these spiky critters, transforming an upstairs room and garage into what can only be described as the hedgehog emergency room. As word spread about their efforts, the couple’s capacity to care for these vulnerable animals skyrocketed, and they quickly needed to find more space.

With the help of 18 volunteers and significant fundraising, the Longhursts established multiple rehab centers across Scotland, complete with treatment wards, an ICU, and over 40 rehabilitation cages. Their mission even extends beyond saving hedgehogs; they actively educate the public on creating safe spaces for these creatures in backyards. This couple’s service has not gone unnoticed; they recently snagged the BBC Make A Difference Award, celebrating their heart and hard work.

Through vehicle strikes, ailments, and other dangers, the Longhursts continue to give these little hedgehogs a fighting chance, reminding us that love and proactive efforts can make the world a better place—one prickly friend at a time. Who knew hedgehogs could lead to such inspiring accolades?
